Position Announcement: Shorebird Coordinator for Goose Rocks Beach The shorebird coordinator will recruit and manage local volunteers who monitor birds on the beach and educate visitors. The coordinator will work with the Town, Maine Audubon, Maine Dept Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and federal agencies to help ensure the success of beach-nesting birds on Goose Rocks Beach. An ideal candidate would be a local person, who can help motivate and create a larger community of shorebird lovers. Dates of employment will be approximately April to September. Kennebunk Plains, July 6, 2013

Nine of us took a tour of Kennebunk Plains. It was a very hot and humid day, 75 degrees at 7:00 turning to 85 by 10:00 am. We still saw a wide variety of birds. Excellent looks and clear songs of the Upland sandpiper, Grasshopper sparrow, and Eastern meadowlarks. One of the group reported that he added 4 “life birds” to his list. Field Trip: Rarity Roundup

Derek will lead us around York County looking for those rare birds still around at this time of year. We will look for late fall migrants as well as any rarities in York County. Derek will surely find these rare birds. Meet at the Kennebunk Rest Area off of Rt 95 Southbound at 7:30am. Cumberland County: April 28, 2012

Seven hardy souls joined the York County Audubon Society on its Saturday April 28th walk, led by Rob Speirs, canvasing Portland’s Stroudwater Marsh, Capisic Park, Evergreen Cemetery, and River Point Conservation Area in Falmouth on a blustery day. Rob began with a description of the output from NEXRAD Radar, showing extremely light movement of birds overnight, due to a high pressure system that’s blocking migration into the northeast. Sanford Sewage Treatment Facility: October 16, 2011

Ten of us joined leader Andy Aldrich at the sewage ponds for a busy 3 hours of birding under mostly cloudy skies. It was breezy but warm as we ambled around the productive property. Highlights included pipits in the scope, a large movement of robins, several Pectoral Sandpipers, a remarkable 31 coots, and a scaup challenge. A Piping Plover Experience

Fifteen campers, ages 7-10, of the Northern Maine YMCA’s Camp Sokosis in Biddeford enjoyed Piping Plover experiences July 14 and 16, 2010. Maine Audubon Staff Naturalist Eric Hynes and Seasonal Piping Plover Biologist Kathryn Friens joined YCAS members Monica Grabin and Pat Moynahan in presenting a two hour program that included experiential learning of bird basics with a focus on Piping Plovers. Games and an art project were used to teach the lesson. The program aims to increase awareness of the Piping Plover’s plight in Southern Maine and discovery of what we can do about it. Downeast Weekend

Just a few highlights from a two day downeast field trip of the York County Audubon Society that tallied roughly 90 species: We hit Machias at high tide on Saturday morning, August 7. Bonaparte’s Gulls were as far upriver as I’ve ever seen them — all the way to the Bad Little Falls. A roosting flock of Lesser Yellowlegs and a distantly foraging flock of Common Terns slowed our rush to Lubec.
